As yet I cannot get the networked game running. It crashes as soon as I try to connect. You just need to add the directplay libraries to wine to enable networked games. dplayx (native) dpnet (native) dpnhpast (native) dpwsockx (native) or, at least these worked for me, ymmv. Just tried this today, and flew around alpha crater on hammer's long term game I used a modified Ubuntu 12.04 Linux (since I hate the new gnome desktop), playonlinux (to organize and isolate my windows software), cdemu for mounting cd/dvd images (I haven't figured out how to swap to disk2 though), wine version 1.5.17 with winxp emulation (within playonlinux). I highly encourage using playonlinux to organize not just games, but all windows software. It helps you manage not only different wine configs, but wine versions, and helps you enable missing libraries (like directplay), debug, and the list goes on... -Digger

I forgot you also have to make sure you have dplaysvr.exe in wine's drive_c windows\system32 folder. Some instructions on adding directplay are here: wiki.winehq.org/DirectPlayGamesIt wasn't near this difficult though. -Digger

Question: Does a game have to have a specific patch made for it, inorder for it to work on Linux?
I have only dabbled a bit with Linux (Ubuntu.)
Edit: More precisely how well would it run a Dos era game (Fragile Allegiance), that microsoft abandoned with vista?

As far as I know, you cant run dos programs directly in Linux. However, It appears that you can use the same solution as in windows, DosBox

Yep, Dosbox for old dos games like Fragile Allegiance (love them asteroids). Wine for windows games like Hardwar.
They just provide the "glue" so the os can run them. Doesn't always work though, sometimes a patch or workaround is required, sometimes it just doesn't work at all.

P.S. Hardwar does run slower on Linux than Win7 however.

Dosbox doesn't run it well enough. And the secondary XP machine I have has a bad update that disables Dos based programs.

hi-can the games ISOs be installed via any virtual drive software? I have attempted daemon tools lite, but I get 'E:' is not a valid msdos function after mounting and attempting to install. I get the error with setup.exe, and on clicking the game exe within, I get MFC42.DLL is not designed to run on windows. Copying any ISO content to my hard drive (just out of interest) gives me multiple files that refuse to move over, with an 'invalid MS-dos function' error (HARDWAR.RES etc). I am running vista 32 bit, two partitions, both ntfs, no issues with vista with too much old software, aside from UAC Does anyone know if the dotemu hardwar works with the patches/unofficial enhancements/updates? They state its for vista/7 so they must have found it easy enough to modify in order to work well. might be the easier option for my system-if its possible to work at all, lol. thanks for any tips-if its not just as simple as burning to cd

Temporarily switch off your antivirus. Right-click on the setup.exe and run as administrator. Install someplace other than C:\Program Files. Download Ian's unofficial patches. Unpack and run the UIM6.0 patch. Run Hardwar (Hardman.exe) only after it has been patched (I think that's where the errors are coming from). -Digger

Also, don't run anything from the cd image other than to install the game.
Hope this helps...

yep, corrupt, didnt notice! the ISOs dload at around 200-300kbps (both), there could be a very slight stop-start lag, its hard to tell. The system believes the downloads have finished, but judging by their size-they are definitely incomplete. My initial disc 1 iso was 197mb and disc 2 was 238mb, but should be 370mb and 297mb according to the site. My second attempt gave an iso of 325, but I attempted to run anyway to see if there was any change. The game asked for installation unlike before, and after installing 40mb of data, it gave a directx pop up issue, then asked for a reboot (possibly believing it had finished installation ok). I at least know that the ISOs are not downloading correctly. I dont think its on my side, as I used dotemu to download The Last Express (1.4 gb, installed fine, dloading at 800+kbps). Perhaps a private torrent would be better than the current forum link, unless there are any other sites with the same ISOs I could try out instead, im not sure. Thanks for the tip, lol. update-ive tried 4 dloads of the first iso in total, it cuts out near the end, different size each time.

I'm working on it. Multiple interruptions will corrupt compressed files.

I've never tried Hardwar but as Im on a 2006 laptop i thought of searching for older 3d games, and found a list mentioning titles few people have heard of. I thought I'd give it a go. I tried downloading the rest of the software the website links to, everything else seems to have downloaded ok, so I think it could be a simple case of the isos not finishing, rather than the data being corrupt all the way through, if thats possible. The demo on here works 100% with the update, although it gives the 'could not locate escaped.spr' message upon quitting (update-just added the escaped.spr from 'missing wez.rar'-fixed!). If the system is stable again, I could give them another go in future. thanks ps the software that seems to be missing (or have invalid links) on this site :- hard edit 2.04 hard extract building swapper resedit changing weather chemical generator explosive fusion hawk 'zerghawk' and swallow 'stinger' skins (although the jpgs exist, can prob just be converted to bmp) If I find any of the above elsewhere Ill let everyone know.

Regarding iso files downloads - I remember I had problems too. But it was caused by build-in download manager in Chrome. Don't know why but it just couldn't download files correctly - tried couple of times and always the file size was wrong. Then I installed Free Download Manager from this site: www.freedownloadmanager.org/and this little program coped with downloading both iso files just fine.

Download managers usually check the file downloaded (a bit like torrents) to the file being downloaded to make sure it gets the whole file. I use JDownloader. It works on most download sites, and a few other places that host videos.
