Installation Instructions
These instructions are written primarily for Debian Linux distributions. Therefore, they
should also work for Ubuntu and its derivatives. I cannot guarantee they will work for Red Hat, CentOS/RHEL-based distributions due to differences in package managers.
1. Install WINE
sudo apt-get install wine
2. Download the
Diskspace Skip app from
Zedo's site or from
Pilot's OneDrive repository.
3. Extract the
diskspace_skip.exe file from the
Diskspace Skip.zip file to a directory (e.g.
~/tmp):
unzip Diskspace\ Skip.zip -d ~/tmp/
4. Insert
Hardwar CD1. Ensure this is auto-mounted in your filesystem. You can check by using the following command:
df -h
It will give you a response and you're looking for something similar to the following:
/dev/sr0 308M 308M 0 100% /media/cdrom0
5. WINE, like Windows, assigns drive letters to all drives including CD-ROM drives. Check to see what drive letter your
/media/cdrom0 directory will be represented as under WINE. There are 2 ways to do this, a or b:
a) Run the following command:
ls -la .wine/dosdevices/
This will give you a response, where you're looking for the letter assigned to
/media/cdrom0. In my case, it's e: or E:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 janskjaer janskjaer 13 Sep 11 13:00 e: -> /media/cdrom0
b) Run the WINE configuration utility:
winecfg
This will provide you a GUI. From here, select
Drives and note the letter next to
/media/cdrom0:

6. Run the
diskspace_skip.exe file with WINE:
wine ~/tmp/diskspace_skip.exe
7. You will be prompted for the drive letter of your Hardwar CD:
App to install HardWar properly in XP. Created by PlaguedMind and Mun
Please enter the CD drive letter which hardWar CD1 is in:
8. Enter the drive letter (use upper-case) and hit the ENTER key. This should be accepted and the
Hardman launcher should automatically open:
Detected Hardman version: F2.0
Patch Successful
Finished! Happy Hardwaring.
Press Any Key To Exit.
7. Use the open Hardman launcher the normal Hardwar installation steps. For the sake of this tutorial, Hardwar will be installed at
C:\Hardwar.
8. Once the setup is complete, run the following to start Hardwar:
wine .wine/drive_c/Hardwar/Hardman.exe
I can report that videos run correctly in full-screen directly from the CD and all audio CD tracks play correctly.
Software and Direct3D modes play flawlessly and have very high framerates. I would like to try to get the 3Dfx and PowerVR renderers working under Linux but I'll leave that for another day.
Don't have the actual Hardwar CD-ROM?Alternatively, if you are using an .iso file, you can mount the .iso with the following:
sudo mount /path/to/your/hardwar_cd1.iso /media/cdrom0
All of the steps above should then be the same. However, if you're using an
.iso, you won't have the audio CD music tracks available.
Equally, it's not possible to mount
.bin .cue files in Linux. You can use
bchunk to convert the
.bin and
.cue files to
.iso and the music tracks to
.wav. However, I haven't found a way to get Hardwar to use the
.wav files as audio tracks in the game:
to install:
sudo apt-get install bchunk
to convert:
bchunk hardwar_cd1.bin hardwar_cd1.cue hardwar_cd1.iso
I hope you enjoy playing Hardwar in Linux.
Happy 20th Anniversary today, Hardwar!
