It's happened to all of us. We have some enemy nearly dead and bump into him. All of the sudden we're stuck to him and die. This happens especially in tunnels. Anyone know what causes this and how to prevent it? It's gotten to where I save a game every time I have a firefight in a tunnel.

Talking from memory... I have had mostly the opposite experience... ... I don't die... and prevent the dead ai to go to limbo... so stuck with a phantom pilot whose moth doesnt explode... in singleplayer I dont remember any succesful way to get around that point... jettisioning cargo and trying to drone it back before it fade beyond the tunnel floor could be a way, full throttle fordward and back or perhaps straffing while trying the mentioned above. Online, if you happens to be lucky enough to be with another live player, sometimes getting hit or bumped into can help... but irc there is a slight chance the player to get stuck too... menagge a trois anyone?

Best way is to eject some cargo. This temporarily disables the collision system. (very short time so apply max thrust, and the afterburner if you have it before ejecting) It's likely what causes the problem in the first place though when the other pilot dies and "ejects" scrap metal and you fly into his colision sphere while collisions are effected. Sometimes I've seen moths stuck trying to eject scrap but unable to do so for some reason, so they just sit there, technicaly destroyed but technically still living. Just devestate those poor souls, other weapons seem to do nothing to them.
Otherwise missiles can help, groundbases might pull him away with enough force to break you two apart. firebases fire the firebase turret thing into the air and might be able to finish him off from an angle. (carefull you don't hit yourself with it) And devestors seem to have special code that destroys moth objects no matter what's wrong with that object.
sometimes just moving a certain direction will unlock you as well. use your directional thrust and joystick movements to see if you can break free. (note, moving away from the doomed moth isn't always the key here.)
Of course if all else fails you can just warp to the god hanger and fix any damage you wrongfully received for free as well... (blag cash to cover your costs)

Interesting replies. ouch, I see stuck cargo all the time. I come across it nearly every time I pirate someone in a tunnel. I'll be tapping them with laser and they drop the cargo, but won't explode. I'll drone the cargo which is still attached to their Moth and they explode as soon as the drone retrieves the cargo. I can tell when they are "stuck and dead" instead of still having Structure because they will give off some flames along with the pre-death smoke (crude graphics under UIM6). I have also been frozen while jettisoning cargo and must target and re-drone it to get going again. Getting stuck to a dying AI Moth is a lot more rare than the above, but a lot more lethal, too. I'll try keeping something in my pod at all times and seeing if jettisoning and droning during the "stick" will help. Thanks for the tips and keep sending more.

Of course if all else fails you can just warp to the god hanger and fix any damage you wrongfully received for free as well... (blag cash to cover your costs) Or you can teleport back to your hangar from there to repair though face it if your at the point you need to blag cash in order to repair you might as well restart from scratch. You could also try using a groundbase, underkill on yourself, shields permitting. 'o' target pilot (Warning Pilot is Targeting You.) [Or whatever way that is written.] (Warning Groundbase Incoming)

How can I groundbase myself. I can't target myself. Can I have a thug base me?

Was asking myself same question... but if Dark says so it must be true... targeting oneself via console... umm... interesting...

It is, I remember playing around with that for flare practice, I never tried energy weapons, I doubt it would but testing the laser turret may be interesting.

It looks like I've got some experimenting to do. I didn't think of using the console. First I'm going to try to shoot myself by targeting via the console. Next I'm going to see if I can order thugs to attack me. Finally, I'll see if I can get the thugs to target themselves and commit suicide.
Hardwar is certainly a game that keeps on giving.

Captain NEMO!!!! Err... Captain Zedo just because failure is not a option for your thugs... doesn't mean you must mercilessly kill your thuglings.
I haven't tried that either...
order bobkit, kill, bobkit (If this doesn't do it...)
exec bobkit,kill,bobkit (Should work...)
And if your admin...
exec Titanium, kill,Titanium (I don't remember the exact name of the aliens you encounter. One of them was like Extra-Titian or something-a-rather.)

I could not get a thug to kill himself. I tried the exact syntax you describe above and got nothing. However, the thug did quit responding to commands after awhile. Hmmmmm.

I think, I meant that as a joke... Have you tried giving them a Devastator then doing it?
On the other hand if you really want them dead...
Issue this command while you thug is docked some where.
order bobkit,go,trade central (any where really except the hangar they are in...
Moth is launching...
order bobkit,clear
What this will do is leave you thug orderless after while in the launching moth state, an orderless thug will just hover there. That being said add "order bobkit, thrust 1000" for about for about the time it will take to type "order bobkit, clear" to block the entry of a hangar.
Disclaimer, do not use this to blockade hangars in on-line games, any violators will be shot on site.

Why so willingly in killing your own thugs? Just let them be they will kill themselves sooner or later, I can bet on that... Perhaps in your brand new and full equipped Swallow, perhaps with that cargo full of gems or narcotics...
Bah! ;D

I'll have to give that a shot just to watch it work.

Remove their Laser add Firebursts, Devestators, and a Laser Turret... And IF they die with that armament, I will bring them back just so I can kill them personally. VIA AI's escape from Limbo.
