Hey guys, so i havent played this game in a long time. I purchased it back in the day from PC world when it first came out and played it to death. 

With the Steam release comming out i thought i would jump back into the game and live in the nostalgia a bit. 

I have noticed there has been some updates to the game, i assume in part due to the UIM which i have read a bit about.

However something i have not been able to find any details on is the new hanger options. It now seems possible to manufacture things ? But How? Where do i buy the modules from? There is also a buy / sell system for goods is this a viable way to make money? Is it possible to buy low sell high?

Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Actually ai pilots will sell your hangar resources in u3 beta 5.
There were 2 versions of beta5 released by ciaran, the first was the most advanced, but the second one has a broken economy. Only the second beta5 was distributed. Maybe some day we could pursuade ciaran to release the original beta5.

Well im not sure which version came with the Steam release? Is that version a broken version?

No, the version that came with steam will be uim06 (Ian Martin update) which was based on u3beta4 which never had purchasing software implemented for your hangar. It's not a broken version though.

Well im not 100% sure about what you are saying but i definitely have the the abiltiy (well at least the option) to select Purchasing on the steam release. Although i havent gotten it to work yet.

That option is about choosing what you want to buy, how much, and at which price. But the AI will not sell to you, because they're not programmed to do so, and because players hangars are missing the purchase software, as stated. The only way to get around this is by playing the enhanced version and even then, only a pilot directly working for you will be able to sell to you (and he can get attacked and killed by pirates like everyone else).

Since you don't seem familiar with the game and there are way too many versions. Let me clarify that for you.

F2: Original version, before any patches.
U1, U2, and U3: Official upgrades by the devs. U1 and 2 were released, however the devs went out of business before U3 was finished. There are 5 betas of this upgrade. The latest, beta 5, had the most features, but it had some bugs and a completely broken economy. It's very much unplayable.
UIM 1 through 6: One of the devs continued working on hardwar after the game was no longer officially supported. He took U3 beta 4 and made some upgrades to it. UIM6 is the steam version and the latest version of hardwar.

And then there is the enhanced version, which are upgrades from Max and Smurph. They have even more versions (way too fucking many, like +10) and they loved to be inconsistent with their release dates. Sometimes they went day/month/year, other times they went month/day/year, then you had year/month/day and well, any combination you can think of. So you looked at something like "version 10.4.5" and went "Ok. Whats that? October 4 or April 10."

I have tried to familiarize myself as best as possible with the current situation in regards to mods / patches / fixes / scripts etc. But it is a bit confusing to say the least. As you say, there seems to be 3-8 versions of each one, each one seems to have its own set of issues where somethings work and somethings dont work and its hard to know really what is best. I have looked at the enhanced versions but then a similar problem of .. Which version

Has anyone compiled a list of the "optimal" version / installs to get a working economy / manufacturing / least bugs etc ?

The UIM version is fine. But if you want to enhance it, I like Smurph 24 July (his latest, I believe) and Max 10 April. Max's later versions are buggy. There have been some fixes here, but even with those fixes flares don't work (once shields are down) and the game crashes if you use the Police ship. The AI uses holograms in later versions as well, which is super annoying. Max 10 April gives me 0 problems.

With enhanced you get: Police patrols and guards spawns (biggest fix imo). Randomized moths and equipment for traders (no more plasma only traders), scavengers and pirates. Taxi and thugs (pilots you can hire) respawn. Protect and supply commands. And some other features, but those are the better ones and nearly all of them can be activated/deactivated at will.

I've been looking through this onedrive from Pilot, seems to have most of everything. But there is no mention of Smurph or Max. Could you please link me to specifically which verisons i need?

I took a peek and saw Max's 10 April release in there, but it looks like Smurph 24 July is missing.

I uploaded the files you need (used kaspersky internet security to scan my own files before).

To install, go to where Hardwar is installed and:

1- Make a backup of the original HardwarW.exe
2- From the HWE_base_uim06_2L folder, copy and replace your HardwarW.exe
3- Copy the "enhanced", "itemdat" and "manufdat" files from the hwe_uim_06_20050410 folder (this is Max)
4- Copy "enhanced2" from the 05.07.27.enhanced2 folder (this is Smurph)
5- Copy both the exe and the readme "HardwarEopt" from the HardwarEOpt folder
6- Run HardwarEopt.exe and select the features you want. Deselect the ones you don't

Thank you for uploading that, I uploaded it to my drive as well in a folder called Xelloth Recommends, incase this topic gets buried.

Did you compare this one and the Enhanced that Jimmy modified? I found a copy, not sure which one tbh, so maybe you can have a go with it. hahah
