Hey fliers! I was just reading Zedo's post on the fastest anyone has gotten thought the plot. That got me thinking in the opposite direction. Such as....how long did it take anyone to figure out you could actually buy a better ship? I mean, I can remember when I first played this game. I bought it at a discount store, I had no clue what so ever of what it was, or how the game was played. Never heard of Zedo's website, etc. I loaded the game, launched the ship, and died immediately in the hanger airlock because the throttle was on full reverse and I banged around in there until I died. I was immediately hooked! lol! I played the game for days and days just flying around in my Silver Y. I was following the plot cause the game prompted me to go here, do this, etc. I also didn't know that you could buy your own hanger. I was constantly paying to have my moth repaired at one of the shops. Seems a long time ago. But it's good to remember what the game was like the first time you played it. Nothing else like it in the world. Of coarse, at some point I figured out you could buy your own hanger. Wow! I can make money there, get my ship fixed there! Buy a better moth! Then of coarse, I started the game over, scavenged and killed and got all sorts of money and a hanger and a better ship.....THEN started the plot. What a great game. I truly wish someone could remake this game using modern game engines and good on-line multi-player coding. A Horse....my kingdom for a horse!!! Speed and Greed on Titan! Hammer

My first days were some 12 years ago. I remember that I found the demo on SoftSeek somwhere around late 1998. I wore that demo out. I found out quickly about droning (Digby's black box), charging, and buying cells.
When I got the full game, I immediately wanted to find a way to fly better Moths. I found Highrise Moths first in my general explorations and figured that that's where you bought Moths.
I'd say that figuring out how to buy Moths came quickly compared to other things. I played as a bounty hunter for months before realizing how amnesty work and using that to take up pirating.
I might never have figured out how to trade to get Moths or Fusion Cells made if it weren't for dyar1. We all owe him a big debt of thanks for beginning the experimenting in trading vs manufacturing.
The reason I started my site was that none of the above was on any of the six or so existing sites in 1999. You couldn't find the price for a moth, cell, etc. I founded the site on a big pricing guide sor of like Consumer Reports for Titan.

Oh Gosh! I remember being so but so pissed off because no matter what I did I always ended dead, and there wasn't any freaking clue of what was going on around or what i was doing wrong... keep in mind my english at the time was below below bad so the plot clues didnt helped any. I never lasted very long on these days... I had to just find Zedo's to realize i could buy an hangar and install a clone... and figure out than trading furs wasn't really profitable... pff....
I found Hardwar thanks to my drunk friend who assured he found the Elite successor at the underdogs, the interminable search was over.... see to believe I thought at the time...
What freaking awesome atmosphere, what freaking annoying hangar sounds! arght! like chewing metalized paper! At first sight realized my friend was right, the search was over.
Btw Hammer... do you want your horse alive and kicking or packed in a box? ... Hope the kingdom has a castle.... and the crapper inside it...

I got hooked to te game some time in 99 I think it was $39.00 when I bought it but I'd have paid more for it now that I know how awesome it is.
I started the game flying around in my little silver with the aggressor package and I attacked almost every flyer till I figured out what defined a pirate and a trader, I got killed quickly of course, the first one I got very far with was a Scavenger so I stuck to that, couldn't stand auto-pilot and had no ideal I could remove, or add software for that matter. The first time I discovered I could buy a hangar I could nearly have ran up my wall in excitement, still being a elite-class newb I went bought me a cell and took it home to my hangar and left it there, I still hadn't discovered light-wells... about Hardwar day 20-40... and thought the only way was to replace the one I have then replace it again with the one I liked best (Cell 4 was the best in the unmodified version) and when I found where to buy new moths in Highrise I made haste to do so, I didn't discover Downtown Moths till around 2001. And didn't find any Hardwar sites till 2005.

One of the things I was most clueless about, and inspired me to begin the site, were the differences between Moths. Once I figured out the game's basic play, I became a bounty hunter and worked really hard to get a Hawk. Oh, that Hawk was something - compared to the Silver-Y I was in.
It took me a while to realize that the Moth I most dreaded facing was the fast Neo-Tiger. Once I got in one I never looked back. Even after dyar1 discovered how to get Downtown Moths to produce Police Moths, I still preferred the Neo-Tiger.
It's embarrassing to think of how long it took me to realize that I wanted to be in the Moth I most dreaded facing.
