Here's the setup. I've shot down some sweet, sweet blag, but I've got a Laz Patrol shooting me. I have to deal with Laz before I drone. When I come back I see a scavenger homing in on my prize (15 CompComp).
I figure I'll try to beat him to it, so I hit the Afterburner. As I near the cargo, I release the drone and cut back the throttle. I've never droned anything so fast! It was almost instant. I'm currently practicing doing this on purpose just to speed up droning times when I have to get the stuff and get out quickly.
Anyone else have experience with this?

Any forward speed on your moth will apply to your drone when deployed. I learned that if you practice you can 'catch' cargo before it hits the water. It's like a game within itself.

yeah, beware of the max drone distance though, it's very easy to have the drone shoot at light speed out to the max drone range trying to pick something up therby destroying it.

I've gotten really good at droning cargo over water. I do a lot of pirating in Riverside and I think it's part of the AI to take cargo over the river. I have a nearly perfect record of snagging cargo over 1000 feet.
If it looks tricky, I just shoot the target a couple of times and let him follow me back over land. In Riverside, I usually have a hangar and the only repair shop, so I can get the target over land by damaging him enough to seek repair. It's a fine line to get him to that point without his dropping his cargo.

Plasma Kannon and Pulse Lasers make them more willing, I've been doing that drone trick a lot I thought it was on the main page, I don't usually use the afterburner except when I have the fuel cells mod on. I try to release the drone right before I pull to a stop almost over the cargo.
A trick that I use against pirates (usually if I have low cell power) that really love what I have in the pod. Is to jettison my cargo before they attack and pickup whatever I can of the lesser valuables, if they get to close to the main item, I leave anything thats low on the priority list to the pirate(s)/scavs, and drone the main item, and then begin flying away at a fourth normal speed (you'll have to juggle your throttle here) before your drone returns, REMEMBER the drone maximum distance is around 450 to 500 so try to keep within 300 to 400 that way you want lose it, and wont dock with it by accident, go to the nearest tunnel before allowing it to dock, and your really low on energy, jettison in the tunnel. Recharge the get back your goods.

Pilot: I use the "Dump and Blast" whenever I'm weak and carrying cargo. This usually happens when I'm starting out in a Silver-Y. If attacked, I'm quick to jettison the cargo. Then I wait until the pirate commits to droning and blast him. This puts me close enough to the cargo to beat the scavengers to it; but I'm not opposed to killing a few rats as well.

I've discovered by chance that if I keep my total cargo value below 2k then I don't get targeted by pirates. That's in a standard economy model though. With the econmod in Enhanced then the item type seems to play a more important role in pirates target choices.

In the native game, cargo value is definitely important in a pirate's choice to attack you. You can run around all day with 9 Ore or ConstMat and never be attacked. I never thought of a dollar figure, but I think I'll experiment with that.

try 2000... Thanks, OUCH! That'll save me a lot of experimenting. I'm currently setting up an older machine with Windows98SE to run all of my older games. I'm looking forward to playing several oldies that just don't play well under XP and up. In fact, Hardwar does the best job of the late 90s games under Windows XP through 7. Mostly due to the patching.

@zedo: I only really use that when my cells are running red. ^^ Well more yellow but close enough that full speed would put them in the red.
