I've always preferred to work without missiles or defenses other than Flares. My favorite combo is the Plasma Kannon and plain Laser. If I'm going to be clearing factions out of their craters, I might carry some Holograms. They can really get you out of a mess. I find that I don't need them so much since I took up using Afterburner.

You really have to use combinations. I don't really have one favorite weapon, although I like the fireburst missile. I use Plasma cannon to reduce the shields, then laser to finish them off. That's about it. I keep it simple. Lots of different things are handy though to try out. Holograms, flares and chaff don't qualify as weapons, since they're countermeasures and don't do any damage to the enemy. The most basic weapons of plasma and laser will get the dirty work done. I like the fireburst missile just because it looks cool in the game. Flys out there, then plasters the enemy ship with fireballs! Hammer

Hammer Chaff can do damage, at least that's what I read on one of the challenges on Zedo's page. Firebursts would be my favorite missile partly because it does look cool and two one flare isn't enough to stop it. But my favorite energy weapon is the laser, I rarely use the Plasma unless I really am just trying to torture my prey. (With my hangar being the nearest.) Second would probably be the Laser Turret if I really don't feel like following the enemi(es)

Flying through Chaff does cause some slight hull damage. I found this out by accident in an online game. I was fighting in a tunnel with no shields and a barely damaged hull. My opponent was escaping and fired off a lot of chaff. I flew after him and noticed that my hull strength dropped a bit. I guessed this was due to flying through chaff.
I experimented with this by flying through chaff intentionally and then entering a hangar to measure the actual percentage of damage. I had someone lower my shields with Plasma Kannon, which wouldn't effect my hull. Then I had them fire Chaff for me to fly through. I went through five fields of Chaff to cause 1% hull damage. That's not a lot of damage, but every little bit helps.
