That's pretty awesome that you have flying and docking figured out. The "dock wherever you want" approach is interesting, probably still want to limit how many can be docked at a time.
Any chance to cut down on the Fog? Something you could do (while most likely not scientifically correct) is you have the Fog have a random density like a weather pattern.
Even more crazier idea (which could be toggled on or off per game) is to have the fog have a random color and each color represents a certain Nerf/Buff, like Blue fog makes your shields stronger, red fog makes your weapons damage more, Yellow fog makes your moth faster, etc. These might not have to be in effect all the time, but could come up randomly like bad or good weather.

Fog is a major gameplay element for me, adds to the eerie feel and helps you to get lost in the world. I had a Pentium 133Mhz on which I played Hardwar, and it could only really handle fog set on close. First time I booted the game I got lost in Alpha crater and loved it. Makes the world feel bigger than it is and gives a sense of exploration. Anyway, I actually wish I could render really good fluid dynamics for clouds and get that to pull through into multiplayer too, so that the cloud looks the same to everyone, but it's difficult. I actually do want to make dynamic weather as you suggest, just to add some variance. Constant fog will make the player feel boxed in, so some craters or some times during the day could have less fog My modelling skills aren't that great so the environment and lighting needs to hide that. I'm sorry, but I probably won't add buffs unless there's a good sci-fi reason for it. I'm not really building a MOBA or MMORPG, more of an MMOFPS but you can fly.

Making good progress, it's awesome! Thanks for sharing with us.
Yeah, I remember having to set the fog to close just to run the game smoothly... Ah.. the memories.

By the way guys, does anyone have contact with Duncan these days? A few years back he made massive progress on extracting buildings as blender files from the old game. Would be great to use the old building meshes as reference and also get back in touch with the guy.
I already found the blend file for the craters as well as the height map.

They were all pretty basic shapes, wouldn't it not be too difficult to recreate them I would think?
If Shrekken can make new models for moths, surely he could probably model a few buildings that are made up of like 10 polys.
The trick will be building placement, will have to be done manually most likely.

Yeah, but the actual building models I don't think are in a format you can use. They may even be all lumped into 1 file if I remember right.

wow, you are making incredible progress
I love the idea of the "cyber punk" lighting. It would be awesome if you could control the lights and signs on the outside of the buildings when you own one.
I also love the idea of apartments, aside from the "low income housing" aspect, 1 person could buy an apartment building, charge rent to other players, or even for having your own faction members living in one building together.
We could have "small scale" production modules that fit in apartments, like food making, cigars, etc, while things like ore processing and weapons making are large scale only and require you to own a full hangar.
While you are working on Lasers, perhaps we could have the Death Ray as well, a rather slow projectile but really powerful
