The technology is becoming so much better that in a couple of years we'll be able to run a dedicated server of any original game versions from a 4G windows enabled smartphone. My latest sony phone has nearly a magnitude more processing power and ram than my first laptop.

Windows tablets have more resources than desktops did when Hardwar was released. It's not that far fetched.

Can windows tablets handle direct X applications as directplay would be needed for a dedicated server game?

You could probably run a dedicated server off a Windows tablet, but over a 4G connection is going to give a lot of lag to your players

I remember the old days when we hosted on 56k modems,it would still be better than that as the refinery did a lot to optimise network performance.A tablet running an instance on a wifi hub might run it then.

You could probably run a dedicated server off a Windows tablet, but over a 4G connection is going to give a lot of lag to your players No. Windows tablets run 8.1 RT, which does not use Direct X. Good point and something that would have to be solved. An emulator can easily use more resources than the game and Windows RT doesn't allow for many free resources.

SOME tablets run Windows RT but most of them in my passing run full blown Windows. If it has an Intel CPU, I can assure you that its Windows 8.1 since Windows RT is designed to run off ARM chips.

Do alternative operating systems such as Ubuntu have their own equivalent to direct X?

You have to use whatever the game was made to support. There is also OpenGL that a bunch of older games use but I believe it has fallen out of favor with newer developers.

It has, but en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebGL is a bit popular in smaller circles. For example, I'm pretty sure that the holoviewer on the link below is WebGL using HTML5 canvas. robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge/ships/origin-m50/M50-InterceptorClick Technical View then Holo View to see what I'm talking about.

WebGL is a new thing that is starting to catch on, I couldn't exactly compare it to the OpenGL of old.

EDIT just this quote: Do alternative operating systems such as Ubuntu have their own equivalent to direct X? Necroing this thread: So OpenGL and Vulkan seems to have really taken off in the past few years. From what I understand Vulkan is approximately directX's competitor without being so... SYSTEMatically inclusive. www.vulkan.org/made-with-vulkan
