Don't care. Win 8 is as far as I can see, is worse than vista, chock full of "features" that will eventually kill windows...dead... Get Win 7 or linux, or go ahead and try and install it under win 8, you'll be the 1st. -Digger Works under windows 8, 64 bit, for me. Core 2 Duo processor Nvidia Quadro NVS 140 videocard Installed original game from cd first then patched UIM6 i did set some compatibility stuff, but not sure if actually needed still need to try internetworked game

I install Hardwar on various machines for friends and the thing that bugs me the most is that it never installs the same way twice. That's a fault of Wnidows, not the game. I've had some straight up installs without any compatibility issues in Windows 7 and go to a similar machine running 7 and have all sorts of problems.
The good news is that I've installed on two Windows 8 desktops and had no problems at all.

Hey everyone. I'm a new OLD player. Gosh I think I played this game on a 98 machine first. I never bought the original game, but I'd like to at some point. Anyway I'm using a Compaq Pavilion dv4 Laptop, running win 7. (ick) I downloaded the patched demo pak from Captain Zedos site. tried to set compat on the setup file. there were no tabs in the little window that opened. Next setup wouldn't work. so I copied all the files into the "Hardwar directory and ran the UIM6 patch. compat mode win 2000 and later 98 mode. First time it ran the game started but when I came out of the hanger the video was like a mouse pointer with tails... As you flew bldgs would multi-replicate crater walls too. I kept trying to lower the rezolutions nothing helped. So I deleted and re-installed. The game starts to load, but when it tests my patience the final time a Fatal error occurs and gives this: SpriteListFit - a block which is 'own page' MUST be square... Anyone got Ideas? I mean short of using a hammer on my blasted win7 lappy

Sounds like a corrupted download to me. I would retry downloading the files.

It is possible all you have to do in most cases is to switch the compatibility mode to XP, I also don't install it to the default folder as well and rarely have any trouble with the installation.
I was talking to a friend of mine at gamestop and he mentioned that one feature that xbox "720" was likely to have was a constant need to be connected to an internet server and that games would be more like they are with PC, IE Non transferable. I can only hope microsoft makes that mistake.
I could write a long rant about how the current gaming scene reminds me of the Atari days were too many half-baked games that were complete rehashes of games released months before them, but I don't think many people notice the repetition.

How right you are about new games being knock-offs of old ones. They mostly remind me of 90s DOOM with better graphics.

SpriteListFit - a block which is 'own page' MUST be square I agree with OUCH for the most part. Here are the settings that work for most people: 1) Compatibility set to XP Service Pak 2 2) Run as administrator (this allows the game to create saved game files and change hardware settings) 3) *Always* use a patch above the 2.01 beta series. I recommend UIM06. 4) Use your video card as the selected display. The game will default to DirectX or Software rendering. If you do not have a video card, use DirectX. Play around with your display options.

Now step 4 on the list is giving me problems. I've found through going to the start menu and typing in the search "dxdiag" that I have the latest Direct X 11 installed and it's working properly. However, when I open the game menus and select display.. then the drop down box Primary display & secondary display are listed and secondary says (usually 3d fx) or somthing like that. How do I setup a secondary display using directx ? I'm hoping when I get home off the road in a few more days I'll have my copy of hardwar I got from "RarePCgames" off of Amazon to install and problems will be solved on both of my computers. Meantime I wanted to see if I could get it to work with the files downloaded off of your website Captain sir. A big THANK YOU for all you do here, and to the others here who are always so helpful!!

I'm downloading the files from my site right now to check them for corruption. I have always had more video options after applying the UIM patches. I currently run mine under the Primary Display setting. I'm lost on your problem at this point.
I'll be checking the downloadable files for corruption and studying modern DirectX.

Checking Device Manager for info: Display adapters: Intel(R) HD Graphics Family Monitors: Generic PnP Monitor.
Let me know if you wish further explorations

As far as I've gotten, it might be a processor problem loading graphics that are below 32-bit. I'm not enough of a programmer to know if Hardwar has such graphics, but they are a big problem. A lot of people can't run X-Box DOS games on 64 bit machines.
