I think I got the game somewhere around 99 for probably 1/4 the price. Good times, hauling narcotics from General Industrial to The After Dark while being chased by tons of pirates! Unfortunately I've never really played the game online; must be great fun to play with others. Same here, spent so much time playing on a small 800x600 monitor. Have to agree that the graphics aged well and the game is still well playable on higher resolutions. Playing UIM06 at the moment and did take a quick glance at the enhanced patches, but didn't have time to find out which one is the most stable (if there even is one ).

I'm sure my eyesight permanently turned to 800*600 because of all the time I played it for.

Playing UIM06 at the moment and did take a quick glance at the enhanced patches, but didn't have time to find out which one is the most stable (if there even is one ). I used to do that run back in the day! These days I just shoot anyone with expensive stuff, run it to nearest trade outpost/weapons shop, then kill pirates for amnesty. Plus buy hangars left, right and centre and activate the repair drones. I also unload the odd bit of cargo there if the outposts don't have enough cash to buy from me. Personally I just stick with UIM06. I find all the other stuff more hassle than it's worth a lot of the time. Some tips though, if you're using the same save file just make a shortcut with this as the target: D:\Games\Hardwar\Install\HardwarW.exe /t:load "Untitled.sav" Obviously using the path to your exe and your save game name. This will bypass the Hardman setup and just load straight into your save. Also, to run without CD, people say to copy HARDSTAR.GDV from the disc to the install directory or to remove the asterisks from the Media.txt etc or I think Zedo even went through the executable with a hex editor and removed all references to HARDSTAR.GDV once. I personally find it way easier to make a new text file and call it HARDSTAR.GDV (without .txt at the end obv.) Simple. Even better, if you want the vids to play make a folder called GDV in the install directory and copy all the GDV's from discs one and two into it. (the reason for GDV folder is so you're not sticking 51 files directly in the install directory) then replace hardstar with the text file version, then open regedit. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Refinery\hardman\Config Change SourcePath to D:\Games\Hardwar\Install\GDV\ (that's my path but obviously use yours). Sorted. Music will still play if you insert a disc. I've tried various winmm wrappers (OGG_WINMM, _INMM etc.) to try and play the music without disc but they don't work. Using the disc is best if you have it. Otherwise just winamp in the background or whatever. I highly recommend the album Airdrawndagger by Sasha for playing Hardwar. Someone please try it. I've been recommending it for years and I've never had someone tell me they have. I think it really works. Anyway, enjoy and welcome to the forum fireburst! Have a nice weekend everyone!

I would be willing to throw another server up if there is any interest in playing online. I have a server out of Chicago on a Gigabit connection, its not ideal for those in Europe, but with the age of the game, a little lag might not be noticeable.
There is also the Discord server if you want to try to hang out and chat.

Am I right in saying you need directx installed to connect to it for directplay because when I tried to connect to your server last time the choose server tab was blank.I only had my graphics card drivers installed without directx 7 or 8 and I couldn't work out why I couldn't connect.

Yeah, you need DirectX installed. I know it worked on Windows 8, I haven't tried playing online since I upgraded to W10.
There also might be some port forwards you need to play online.

Now it makes sense.Windows 7 contains the graphics drivers found in directx 8 but doesn't have the directplay drivers from dx8.Thats why I could run a single player instance but not a multiplayer game.Thanks.

It's been a few years, but I feel like when I went to play online, Windows detected it needed DirectPlay and automatically started to install the "Feature".

Been a little busy over the weekend, so haven't tried your tips yet, but will definitely follow up on them tomorrow - they'll make starting the game even easier. I usually just play some music in the background using winamp/foobar like you suggested, that way you're not stuck to the same playlist all the time I've installed munitions machinery in my hangar and manufactured a load of sprats, they're a good source of income I have to say! Had a quick listen to Airdrawndagger and it does fit well into the Hardwar theme, will listen to it better when playing the game and tell you what I think of it! I'd be willing to have a game online, if others are willing to play as well? If there's too little interest then it's understandable you don't want to keep a server running all the time, Teeth. I'm in Europe, but I'm pretty sure any lag would be due to the game's netcode itself (which is understandable, given the game's age) rather than connection speed.

It's been a few years, but I feel like when I went to play online, Windows detected it needed DirectPlay and automatically started to install the "Feature". That's where I've went wrong, every operating system before and after windows xp up to Windows 7 only gives you the required directplay drivers if you install directx 8 and 9 which I believe is the real reason not many online games have been hosted the last few years.

If you can connect to a game, I cant imagine you shouldn't be able to host one. I ran mine from Server 2008 which is based off of W7 however. I will do some testing on my W10 PC in a little bit.

I can't even remember the last time I played online. Let us know how you get on, teeth. fireburst > Awesome! Bloodlock is my favourite track on that album. And yeah, munitions is always a great income source, although I never actually use them really. I honestly find the laser so fast firing that if you get in behind someone, that's it for them. Not much good if you're not the one initiating the firefight though. Or if you don't have a fusion cell. But yeah, I mostly laser people to death for their goodies, then switch to afterburners and leg it, keeping tabs on anyone who targets me. (normally means a quick amnesty after selling stuff). I must admit that I'm still impressed with the way the game saves the 'exact' state of the game world when you save it. Although I did die once and accidentally clicked save instead of shutdown. Not good.

I just put the server back up on my Server 2008 virtual server, and connected to it from my Windows 10 PC. I did have to forward the ports in my router but it seemed to work fine. If I used the Windows firewall, I would probably have to configure that too.

Listened to the album while playing Hardwar and it really does fit within the whole theme of the game, good find Lee! Will keep it playing in the background. I rarely ever used anything else than the plasma kannon / laser (turret) combo either, but I guess I'll have to somehow get rid of surplus ammunition now Will try to join the online game now!

Glad to hear it. I think the music can really make or break the experience in a game. I don't really have a favourite genre, if I like something, I like it regardless. I tend to hear a particular track that I like in a film, game or advert etc and then track it down along with the album. Sometimes it's a good album, and sometimes just that one track is good and the rest are crap! With Sasha, I heard his track Xpander on wipeout 3 and that led me to get airdrawndagger. I just so happened to have the CD on in the background whilst playing hardwar once and it really worked. Maybe not for everyone obviously, but glad you like it
